Bolingbrook Library To Host Social Media Safety Event
BOLINGBROOK, IL — With growing concerns regarding safety on social media, state Rep. John Connor, D-Lockport, and state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, will welcome representatives from Facebook to provide safety tips and strategies during a seminar scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Bolingbrook's Fountaindale Public Library, 300 W. Briarcliff Rd.
"As a parent to young kids, I know I'm concerned as to what they view on the internet," Connor said. "As they get older and eventually join social media websites like Facebook, I believe it's important that we have an understanding of what dangers do exist on these sites, and how to avoid them."
Officials from Facebook will discuss common dangers on social media, including cyberbullying and scams. They will provide examples of what to look out for, as well as ways that individuals can protect their identity and report problems. The seminar will be free and open to the public.
"Social media continues to grow and have a greater impact on the day-to-day lives of families across our world," Connor said. "While there are many positives from this development, it's equally important that we understand the risks and carefully use these websites."
