And, the sixth step is to start searching for homes that fit within your budget.  One of the easiest ways to find homes for sale is a map search.  Find a good site where you can easily search by Chicago neighborhoods.  Then, there are other niches such as:  Luxury Homes in Chicago, New Construction in Chicago, and Condos For Sale in Chicago.  You'll also want to get to know the market in Chicago so you can make a great decision on the home you buy.  You must be able to see homes that have actually sold in order to know what something is worth.  Current homes on the market may be overpriced so they are a horrible indicator of what you should pay for a home.  Find a good Realtor or website to get some specific Chicago Market Reports.

You can find all this info and more on my group's website.  It's fast and easy to navigate.  It will give you the best information around.  Visit  viltgroup.com to see what I mean.
